17 years ago, the United Nations appointed that this day, the 18th December, be recognised around the world as International Migrants Day.
The date was chosen because on the same day, back in 1990, the UN adopted the treaty, International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. This was a giant step forward in creating laws to respect migrants’ basic human rights.
Overseas migrants work extremely hard to send money to their families and loved ones. Today, let’s take a moment to recognise the contributions made by millions of migrants to the economies of their home countries.
To help celebrate this holiday, we thought what better way possible than to announce the winner of our holiday Win a Flight Home competition…
A huge congratulations to Francis Enyi!
Originally from Nigeria, Francis now lives in Germany. The last Christmas he spent with his family was in 2010! He’ll be able to go home to see his young son Jesse and his daughter Isabel, who he’s actually never met yet.
We can’t wait for Francis to be reunited with his wife and kids for the festive season.
And a huge thank you to all who shared their stories with us about the last time they were home for the holidays. So many amazing stories, but there could only be one winner. We truly wish everyone could have won. It was great to see the sense of community that was built, with everyone talking amongst themselves about their stories. To sum it all up, as the wonderful Rachael Margaret said in her post:
“It’s not about winning the ticket. I wanted to also share my story to encourage others that may have a similar situation – you are not alone in this.”
We’ll catch up with Francis shortly to find out what he thinks about being our winner!
Thank you to each and every one of our customers for sending with us – here’s to you today, and everyday, for all the hard work you do.
